South Court, a six-story infillstructure in the open southcourtyard of the Center for the Humanities Building, is the first permanentaddition to the historic New York Public Library in 89years. In an area that once servedas an entrance for horsecarriages, South Court accommodates the Library’sgrowing public educationprogramaswellasadministrative and staff supportspace. The new building houses an electronicteaching center, an orientationtheater, an auditorium, administrativeoffices, and a staff loungelocated on the glass-walled top floor.
As an addition to a landmark building, the projectdemanded a structurethatwasnotvisible from the exterior of the originalCarrère and Hastings building. In order to provide the desiredspace and programelements, thefamousArchitect studio Davis Brody& Bond createdlevelsbelow grade, therebymaintaining the existingbuilding’sheight. South Court isdetached from the originalstructure, touching the existingfaçadeslightly, makingonlyminimalconnectionsnecessary for travelbetween the twobuildings.
